Huck Finn
The American people in today's civilization are too sensitive. We have lost touch with the true meaning of most things whether they be songs, books, or pieces of art. When a song is written, it is not meant to harm one group of people. It is merely the artist writing their feelings and it is unfair that they get bashed because people read too much into their song. Or books. Books use racial slurs, often because that was the language of the time or it has a specific purpose. But people are too sensitive to realize that language is what completes the book, otherwise it would not make nearly as much sense. Like in Huck Finn, Mark Twain uses racial slurs and, though it may seem racist at first glance, his language is working towards his antiracial stance which stands strong throughout the novel. People are too sensitive to realize that he is working towards the same thing as them. By refusing to let students read the book, they are, in a sense, working against themselves. Another example is the song "Baby It's Cold Outside". The song is over 54 years old yet only recently have people become sensitive to the message sent. In reality, it's only meant to be an enjoyable Christmas song. But now it is a controversial debate still raging even after the holiday season is over. Looking back on our actions and what we choose to comment on, it seems quite obvious that we have become too sensitive to things that were not meant to spark such a negative reaction.
Fantastic blog post! I enjoyed your explanation of the growing sensitivity of topics that contain crude vocabulary, without the negative intent. I definitely agree with your point of that overprotection leading strides against our goals!
